How to Make Moving Day a Breeze - Noel Jones

How to Make Moving Day a Breeze

The success of your moving day will be largely down to how much effort you put into preparation and planning. The Ultimate Moving Checklist by Kent Removals will guide you through preparation and planning from two months out from your moving date. If you follow the checklist, you’ll be prepared and will hopefully avoid the stress that can come with moving day.

It’s important to remember that no matter how well prepared you are, moving day is going to be busy. So, to make sure everything goes off without a hitch here’s a rundown of what you should be focusing on when moving day rolls around.

Create Clear Access Points

Your removalists need clear access to your driveway and home. If when they arrive there is nowhere to park the truck and access points are blocked with boxes it will create delays. As soon as you get out of bed on moving day check that all access points are clear and move your own vehicles well away from the front of your property.

Give Clear Instructions

Every house move is different and you may have expectations on what you want packed first and where you want it to go in your new home. To make everything more efficient, walk your removalists through your home and give them clear instructions. If possible provide them with a floor plan of your new address (try downloading one from the online listing at realestate.com.au), with clear diagrams as to where you want everything placed.

Sort Your Boxes

Make sure high-priority boxes are labelled and are the easiest to access. You should also point these out to your removalists; that way they’re the last boxes on the truck and the first ones off.

Keep Your Itinerary

Your itinerary is your most valuable document on moving day. Have it on you at all times and mark things off as they go on and off the truck.

Carry Precious Items Yourself

It’s advisable to carry important and precious items such as heirlooms, jewellery and important documents yourself. They’ll be in good hands with your removalist, but there’s no point taking the risk with anything that is irreplaceable.

Leave a Note

You should always leave a note at your old address with your new contact details just in case you’ve left anything behind or you need any mail forwarded to your new address.

At Your New Home

Here are the first things you should do when you arrive at your new home:

  • Check that all utilities have been connected; you’re going to need a hot shower after a long day.
  • Check the condition of all your items before you sign-off on the inventory.
  • If you’re renting, take photos of everything and make sure you note down any problems in the condition report.
  • Check the house for anything the previous occupants may have left behind. You should also check the house and garden for toxic substances, especially if you have children or pets.
  • Remember to leave your fridge upright for at least three hours. This gives the coolant gas enough time to settle.
  • Setting up beds should be at the top of your priority list; everyone is going to be exhausted at the end of moving day. If you’ve got the beds set up everyone can fall into bed with minimum fuss and get a good night’s sleep allowing them to tackle the remainder of the unpacking the following day.
